A superb true pair of Staffordshire pipe smoking dogs previously unrecorded as a pair in this size. A pair of russet and white decorated seated dogs each with a pipe in its mouth, both with separately moulded front legs on rococo scrolled and decorated bases highlighted in gold. The inspiration for the pipe smoking dog was an oil painting by Landseer titled ‘A Quiet pipe’ which later became a popular Pears print at the turn of the 19th century. Both dogs have had a professional invisible repair to the pipes and minor touches to the overglaze red, no other damage, repairs or restoration, c1850.
