A Large Pair of Disraeli Dogs & Puppies

A superb original Victorian pair of large reclining Disraeli Dogs with pups, possibly Newfoundland’s or St. Bernard’s. One example can be found in Harding’s book two on page 228, figure 2805. The pair to my knowledge has never been recorded before. The illustration in the book do not do these figures justice, the scale is difficult to determine from the photograph. In reality, these dogs are much larger than you would imagine, just over 6 inches high and 8.75 inches long. The previously unrecorded pair to the dog is the bitch with two puppies. Both dogs are reclining and are superbly modelled with several subsidiary moulds to include, separately moulded front legs, a back leg each, and tails. Both are decorated in the round with rich underglaze black patches and overglaze enamels to the nose area and eyes. They have faded gold collars, padlocks, and chains. Both have Disraeli curls to the top of their heads, so do the little puppies! The Disraeli curls became a popular addition to many dogs produced in Staffordshire during the time Benjamín Disraeli was in office. They are in remarkable condition, near perfect, just two minor chips have been restored. The repairs are invisible, this quality  work was completed by the ceramic restorers to the British Royal Family. These dogs are without doubt one of the rarest large original pairs of Victorian Staffordshire Disraeli dogs available on the open market. They were made in Staffordshire England c1868.
