A large imposing early nineteenth century earthenware figure of John Milton c1820, standing on a rectangular marble effect base, decorated to front and both sides with sweeping brush strokes in yellow, red, and grey enamel colours. He stands bareheaded, his left arm resting on a raised pedestal with two books and a splendid scroll. The pedestal is decorated in relief with a scene from ‘Paradise Lost’. His cloak is draped around his left shoulder, waist and right leg. This remarkable figure stands 15 inches high and is known to pair with William Shakespeare. Restoration to pedestal and base chips and also his left hand.
