Height: 17.2 Inches / 44 cm
Reference: Myrna Schkolne Holding The Past (The William Herbert & Nancy Hunt Collection), Page 243, Fig 245
An important monumental early lead-glazed bust of William Shakespeare (1564- 1616). William Shakespeare is England’s best-known poet, so it follows that busts of Shakespeare are among the most popular of all earthenware busts to be produced. Many pot banks fashioned them after the head on the figure of Shakespeare in Westminster Abbey. This large example is in excellent condition, a well coloured piece using detailed superior overglaze enamels throughout, the face particularly well decorated. A crisp rendering showcasing how well the modelling appears when a bust is fresh out of the mould, this piece having an unusual shaped multicoloured marble effect socle. Made in Staffordshire, England c1820 and in mint perfect condition.
Provenance: From a prestigious private collection in the USA.
