An exceptional quality pair of Staffordshire pottery glazed furniture rests. These fine examples are wonderfully decorated in overglaze enamel colours. Remarkable renditions that capture the essence of the subject perfectly. These colourful furniture rests decorated with bright enamels portray the face of the Arthur Wellesly the first Duke of Wellington, (1769-1852), the leading soldier and statesman of his day. It is now generally agreed that objects such as these functioned as rest under small pieces of furniture to protect from rising damp. They were particularly useful when placed under a spinet, where they reduced the vibration, thereby protecting the floor or carpet beneath. Made in Staffordshire, circa 1830. See Schkolne, Holding the Past: the William Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection of English Pottery, page 37.
