This exceptional and previously unrecorded pearlware Staffordshire spill vase group figure of the “Flight to Egypt” intricately depicts the biblical scene of Joseph guiding his donkey, with Mary seated upon its back, cradling the infant Jesus. This recently discovered masterpiece is attributed to the renowned Obadiah Sherratt pottery, which flourished in Staffordshire.

One notable feature of this piece is the delicate floral sprigs that adorn its base, a characteristic often found in numerous figures produced by Sherratt. The figures are expertly modeled with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing high-quality enamel decoration that is particularly prevalent in religious-themed artworks of this era.

While this figure does have a professional restoration to the donkey’s ears and Joseph’s right hand, it remains in excellent condition overall, with no further damage, repairs, or visible restoration work. Crafted in Staffordshire, England, around 1820, this piece is not only a significant representation of religious artistry but also a remarkable example of early 19th-century English pottery.
