Gretna Green Wedding Group (Sherratt)
Stock No: 002277
Height: 7 Inches / 18 cm
Reference: Myrna Schkolne Staffordshire Figures 1780 to 1840 Vol, Page 10, Fig 139.5
A fabulous pearlware bocage type figures group attributed to the famous Staffordshire potter Obadiah Sherratt commemorating the Marriage at Gretna Green. This group shows a couple wed by the blacksmith at Gretna Green a small hamlet just over the border from England in Scotland. Such events were known as anvil weddings and enabled couples over 16 to be wed with the presence of two witnesses. This amusing figure is well modelled on a characteristic colourful Sherratt oval feathered base showing the loving couple wed by the Blacksmith over the anvil which is surrounded by his tools of the trade, the castellated buildings in the background fashioned as a double spill vase holder. The open bible sits on the anvil while a faithful little dog sits patiently to the brides side. The figure would have caused much amusement at the time as it still does to this day. Made in Staffordshire, England c1820.
