A fine figure of a standing man on a circular gilt lined base, wearing a brimmed hat, short jacket, waistcoat, breeches, and thigh boots. This figure represents John Bull, the typical Englishman, the invention of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). In his writings he was presented as ‘an honest plain-dealing fellow, choleric, bold and of a very inconstant temper’. In excellent condition having no damage, repairs, or restoration, made in Staffordshire England c1850.
