This very rare figurine of Madame Vestris portrays the character Paul from the classic tale “Paul & Virginia.” The figure depicts Paul in a kneeling position on an intricately designed oval base adorned with gilt lining. His posture suggests a moment of prayer, with his hands clasped together in reverence. He is dressed in a simple yet elegant ensemble consisting of a shirt, necktie, waistcoat, and loose trousers, reflecting the attire from the era of the story.

The narrative of “Paul & Virginia” was inspired by a novel published in 1787 by the French author Bernardin de St. Pierre, which has since inspired a multitude of operatic adaptations. The first opera rendition premiered at Covent Garden in 1800, and the piece has seen several revivals, with the most memorable production taking place in 1822 at Drury Lane.

This particular figurine is a finely crafted and decorated example of early Victorian art, manufactured in Staffordshire, England, around 1840. Its craftsmanship showcases the attention to detail typical of this period. Importantly, the left hand has undergone a professional invisible chip repair, ensuring that the piece maintains its aesthetic integrity. Aside from this minor restoration, the figurine is in excellent condition with no additional damage or repairs, making it a valuable addition for collectors of Victorian-era art.
