Reference: (For a similar example see) Anthony Oliver The Tribal Art of England, Page 63, Fig 83

A very rare and previously unrecorded seated monkey playing the cymbal’s, wearing a tricorn hat, long sleeved shirt, and trousers. The late Mr Anthony Oliver suggests many fairground theatres produced plays with monkey heroes, he goes on to say, actors disguised in masks and skins played the parts and were very popular. Others suggest they may have been copied by the Staffordshire potters having been inspired by the ‘Meissen Monkey Band’. This example is in mint perfect condition, c1835-40.
