A fine quality Staffordshire pottery lead-glazed figure of a press ganger. A remarkable rendition that captures the essence of the subject perfectly with particularly fine attention to the painted detail. This gentleman is a press ganger, who would have forcibly recruited British men between the ages of fifteen and fifty-five to serve in the British Navy. He holds a cudgel and a money sack. The latter held shillings because an inebriated man who unknowingly accepted “the king’s shilling” was committed to serve. Decorated with underglaze oxides, it is 5.6 inches high. Made in Staffordshire, c. 1800. See Schkolne, Holding the Past: the William Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection of English Pottery, page 37.
Current Condition: Old repair to back corner of base.
Provenance: Retains the label of the Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection
