A superb diminutive reclining Disraeli Dog, possibly a Newfoundland. This example, to my knowledge has never been recorded before. The dog is well modelled and coloured with a torques and yellow scrolled base. It is decorated in the round with rich underglaze black patches and overglaze enamels to the nose and base, it has Disraeli curls to the top of the head. The Disraeli curls became a popular addition to many dogs produced in Staffordshire during the period Benjamín Disraeli was in office. It is in remarkable condition, near perfect, just one minor chip to the back base has been restored. The repair is invisible, this quality work was completed by the ceramic restorers to the British Royal Family. This very rare figure was produced in Staffordshire England c1868.
