A fine large imposing figure of the Rev. Christmas Evans, standing on a titled gilt lined base with raised gilt capitals, his left hand resting on a pillar with books, his right hand across his chest holding a book, wearing a tailed jacket, waistcoat, breeches, and stockings. The source for this figure was a line engraving by E. Pick published by  Mackenzie of London Edinburgh and Glasgow, a copy of which is in The National Museum of Wales. This example is probably the best you will ever find, it is in perfect condition having no damage, repairs, or restoration. The provenance is impeccable, this actual figure was featured in John Hall’s book Staffordshire Portrait Figures (Letts 1972) on page 41. Made in Staffordshire England c1866, the centenary of his birth.

Provenance: From the collection of the late Mr Harry Ryans.
