A superb and extremely rare diminutive bust of Robert Raikes a philanthropist and one of the pioneers of the Sunday School movement. This fine bust depicts the head and shoulders of Mr Raikes wearing a grey wig, white shirt, and high collared black jacket with gold buttons. The front of the socle is decorated with the title in gilt capitals R,Raikes,Esqr, and gilt script, Founder of Sunday Schools, the back has the name R Raikes impressed into the clay. Decorated in overglaze enamels and highlighted in fine gold. It was possibly made to commemorate his passing on the 5th April 1811.

Current condition: Very good, professional invisible repair to minor grazes to nose and front left corner of socle.
