A figure of Ben Backstay standing cross-legged and girl, his right hand holding a money-bag, his left around her waist, wearing a boater, jacket, neckerchief, shirt, and trousers, she beside him, wearing a bodice and skirt. There has been no source found to this rare figure, the subject matter suggests T. P. Cooke in the role of Ben Backstay, dancing the hornpipe. There is also the possibility that this piece represents another version of the sailors return. A superb and very rare example c1840’s. This is the actual figure that was used for the illustration in Harding’s book.
