A group figure of a man standing on a decorated gilt lined base, holding apart the jaws of a lion which is attacking him. This group represents Samson and the lion. Judges 14-5/6 ‘then Samson went down, and his father and his mother Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath, and behold a young loin roared against him. And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand.’ A very dramatic figure often misinterpreted as being the great Victorian lion tamer ‘ Isaac A. Van Amgurgh‘, the beloved circus performer and favourite of Queen Victoria. The figure is recorded in four different sizes, this being the third largest, it is in good condition having a professional repair to the lion’s front paw, no other repairs or restoration. Made in Staffordshire, England c1860.
