A fine and possibly unique Staffordshire figure of St Sabastian shown tied to a tree semi-naked, wearing a loincloth. He has his right hand raised above his head, his left down to his side and has been pierced with arrow wounds about his body. The figure is earthenware with overglaze enamel painted decoration, impressed on the front ‘S SEBASTI O;M and the reverse ‘No 11’, the enamel painted piece also with impressed name ‘E WOOD’ on the reverse, Pat Halfpenny suggests that the figure was made by Enoch Wood, c1825-30. Inferior figures were also produced from the same moulds in the late 19th early 20th century by William Kent of Burslem. An extremely rare original period figure, the only known early example ever recorded.
Current Condition: Professional restoration to right hand, and minor touches to enamel.
