This serene enamel-painted figure depicts Mary holding the infant Jesus lovingly in her arms. He holds a globe, signifying the universe. A small hole atop her head once supported a metal crown or halo, and a hole in Jesus’s head served a similar purpose. Height 10.5 inches. Made in Staffordshire c. 1825. See Schkolne, Holding the Past: the William Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection of English Pottery, page 344. This figure is among a group that Enoch Wood made for the Portuguese Catholic market. An unpainted figure of the same form was excavated from the Burslem Old Town Hall site associated with Enoch Wood and is impressed “28” beneath; it is now in The Potteries Museum, Stoke-on-Trent. A similar enameled figure titled N. S. DOBOM DESPACHO (Our Lady of Good Delivery) is in the Brighton and Hove Museums. For both these see Schkolne, Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840, vol.2, figs. 107.18-19.
