Large Pearlware Medici Lion

Stock No: 000577

Height: 10 Inches / 26 cm

Reference: Myrna Schkolne Staffordshire Figures 1740-1840, Vol 3, Page 148, Fig 126.1

A good large early lead-glazed earthenware Lion with enamel decoration c. 1815. Provenance; old Oliver Sutton label to the underside.

Earthenware lions of all sizes are frequently modelled standing with one forepaw placed atop a globe. This pose is after that of the marble lions that stood at the Villa Medici in Rome but were moved to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence in 1789. This example is in fantastic condition.
