George Frederic Handel
Stock No: 001232
Height: 8.75 Inches / 22 cm
Reference: Similar to an example in Myrna Schkolne Staffordshire Figures 1780 t0 1840 Vol 4, Page 230, Fig 200.25
A superb rare and previously unrecorded bust of George Frederic Handel 8.75 Inches high. This bust of Handel (1685-1759) the composer is an unusual example, lead-glazed earthenware decorated with underglaze colours of brown, blue, and yellow. The rich lead glaze has a particularly deep blueish hue. Dressed in a full wig, neckerchief, and jacket over which is thrown a cloak. He is on a shaped and sculpted socle, decorated to the front with a hand painted yellow and brown flower motif. The bust is probably after a work by Louis-Francois Roubiliac. This example reminds me of similar quality figures produced by Ralph Wood but is not signed, the quality is very good and dates to c1770-1780. Condition, slight rubbing to the glaze in places, no damage, repairs, or restoration.
