A superb and very desirable large Staffordshire Foxhound spill vase, right facing and standing on an oval gilt line base before a tree in the shape of a spill vase. Mr Pope describes this figure with as much enthusiasm as one can muster for this splendid example. ” Hounds have been used to hunt the fox since the 13th century and finally ousted stag-hunting, as the National sport of the English gentry during the 18th century. To compete against the smaller more calculating quarry, the Foxhound evolved by crossing the larger Stag-hound with Bulldogs, Terriers and Greyhounds achieving determination and stamina along with greater speed. Kept in packs and bred strictly for the hunt, he remained a pure working breed and a common sight throughout 19th century rural England. This example, produced by the Thomas Parr factory, is very well decorated, it has a minor restoration the tail end and one small bocage tip. Made in Staffordshire, England c1855.
