A superb and very rare well matched large pair of seated lions with lambs below. The inspiration for these figures may well have been the circus act of the American Isaac Van Amburgh who made ‘the lion lay down with the lamb’. There is also an argument put forward by Stephen Duckworth, in his book ‘Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Religious Figures’ on page 44. Here he describes the figures as possibly representing ‘The Peaceable Kingdom.’
These figures can be found in three different sizes 6.75, 8, and 10.25 inches high, these being the largest. They are both in original condition having no repairs or restoration. Made in Staffordshire, England c1848.
