A Standing Footballer

Stock No: 001214

Height:  14.5 Inches / 37 cm

Reference: Harding Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1875-1962, Page 101, Fig 4160

A large standing figure of a footballer, his left foot raised resting on a football, both hands on hips, dressed in shirt, shorts and boots with stockings and shin pads. An unusual figure in so far as a registration number appears on the back of the bottom, No 866136. The figure has been mentioned in a 1997 Christies auction catalogue as being a portrait of ‘Wee Macgregor‘ (published 1901) and emanating from the Britannia Pottery Co. Ltd, Glasgow, which was in production under various ownership between 1857-1939. However, to date there is no documented evidence to back up this claim. The figure has been made in the Staffordshire tradition, is decorated in overglaze enamel colour decoration, has a thick clear glaze with age related crazing throughout, which in my opinion is conducive with having been manufactured at the turn of the 20th centaury.

Current Condition: Very Good, minor overglaze enamel flakes and rubs, firing shrinkage faults to underside.
