A superb example of an early pearlware enamel decorated figure of Charlotte at the Tomb of Werther, standing in classical attire, wearing a head wreath, armless full length dress, and sandals, she clutches a turned funerary urn atop a square column. The Sorrows of Young Werther, a German novella by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published in 1774, tells of Werther, who kills himself when he cannot have Charlotte, the woman he loves. Charlotte buries him under a linden tree. A tragic adaptation by Frederick Reynolds opened on the London stage in 1785. This example is in perfect condition having no damage, repairs, or restoration, made in Staffordshire, England c1790-1810.
