A very rare porcelaneous, enameled and gilt Staffordshire figure of Dr Syntax seated holding a pen and sketchbook, ‘Drawing after Nature’ (published in Ackermann’s Repository in 1813). Wearing a wig, hat, jacket, breeches with stockings, he sits holding a book in his left hand and pen in his right. A delightful rare example in good restored condition, left foot professionally restored and black enamels touched. Made in Staffordshire, England c1830. Dr Syntax was an immensely popular fictional character created by William Combe. A fictional cleric, popularised in ‘Political Magazine‘ from 1809 under the title ‘ The tour of Dr Syntax in search of the picturesque’ and illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson.
