A standing figure of an elephant on a titled lustre lined base, with raised capitals.

Jumbo was obtained as a two year old in 1865 by the London Zoo and became a great favourite and attraction, but as he grew older he became unmanageable and dangerous. In 1882, despite opposition, he was bought by the American showman, Phineas Barnum, and shipped to America. In 1885 in Canada he charged a train, knocking it on its side and derailed its freight cars, he died as a result of the injuries incurred. This example dates to the later period and may have been made to commemorate his passing, c1885. Restored holes and touches to brown enamels.
