A well coloured group figure of Mr and Mrs Caudle seated together on a couch, they are on a titled base with gilt script, Mrs Caudle with her right hand on her husband’s hat, her left by her waist, wearing a blouse, sleeveless jacket and dress. Mr Caudle seated cross legged with his head resting to the side as if asleep, his right arm hanging over the side of a chair, his left resting on his chest, wearing a wide brimmed hat, jacket, waistcoat and trousers. Originally serialized in “PUNCH” in 1845, Mrs. Caudle’s incessant petty lectures to her unfortunate husband–enacted in the matrimonial bed at the close of each day when he is compelled to lie and listen. This example has a professional restoration to his left toe, no other repairs or restoration. Harding describes this figure in his book but is not illustrated, made in Staffordshire, England c1845.
